The Cottage 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
We took the 1950 cabin, home to the legendary bootlegger Clyde McCall, lifted it up and put a new footer, foundation, and sun room addition. Next, we set it back down and totally refurbished from the studs out. Everything is new inside and out.
The space
Clyde McCall owned the home and 400 surrounding acres. He made his living the old fashioned way. He logged and raised livestock, gardened and made moonshine, he lived hard and lived long. His family shares that he only had one glass of water in his life, and didn’t like that. We have added a Bunk house, Bath House, and a Shelter with a beautiful rock fireplace to the property. In addition we are converting a 1948 school bus to lodging. There’s lots of room to spread out and enjoy the creek and relax on the nine acre property.

Hike or bike Dupont, Pisgah, or Headwaters (all less than 10 miles) or hang out by the creek that runs right through our nine acres.
The space
It’s said that Clyde only drank one glass of water in his life, and didn’t like it. His descendants still live on all sides of Gear Down and love to share stories of their role helping protect the still from “Revenuers”.
The Bunk House, Shelter, and Barn are located up the hill from the Cottage. There’s a creek that runs in front of the Bunk House and lots of room to relax indoors or out.

Just minutes away from Dupont State Forest, you are in the heart of nature and activities. Explore waterfalls, the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking trails, Sliding Rock waterpark, biking trails, and more. While not enjoying nature, the town of Brevard offers a variety of shops, restaurants, art galleries, live music, and more!

This two week stay was one of the best vacations we ever had. The location was relaxing, in close contact with nature and at the same time near modern conveniences like restaurants and shops. The hosts, Marty and Jill did their best to keep us comfortable and informed. Thank you for everything.

All I can say is WOW!!!! Marty and Jill made me feel like I was family. They went out of their way to make the trip quite amazing and enjoyable. Although simple, the amenities were clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend anyone going to the Brevard area to stay at Marty and Jill’s place. You will NOT be disappointed!!!! We stayed here for 6 nights and enjoyed every minute that we were there. The house is cute, and seemed to have everything that we needed. We were close enough to a number of activities and cities. We spent time in Saluda, Hendersonville and Asheville, and also went to Pisgah and Dupont National Forests. If you are looking to view waterfalls, this is the place to go. We “only” managed to see 10 of the 240+ waterfalls that are in the area, but that just gives us a reason to come back!
